The Jewish Museum, in Sweden's oldest preserved synagogue in the heart of the Old Town, is a museum of Jewish life, religion, tradition and history. Explore Jewish life in Sweden over several hundred years via contemporary art, historical objects and photographs in both temporary and permanent exhibitions.

Själagårdsgatan 19 was the centre of Jewish life in Sweden for almost a century. In 1795 the Jewish congregation moved in and established a synagogue and religious school. It was also the home of the rabbi, the cantor and the kosher butcher, and there was a ritual baths, a mikva, in the cellar. The kitchen baked Passover matzo for the whole community. It is now a museum which tells the story of Jewish history in Sweden.

The main permanent exhibition is a journey through time through Jewish culture and history. It interweaves the history of Jews in Sweden with contemporary art, historical objects and photographs. In addition to the permanent exhibition they also organise temporary exhibitions. About one minority, for the majority.

You can explore the exhibitions on your own, via a guided tour or by joining a guided city tour during the summer months. On these walking tours you'll learn about more than the usual kings and bloodbaths; the Jewish Museum uses the streets and alleyways to tell the story of Swedish-Jewish history.

Buy a souvenir from your visit in the museum shop. They sell books, kippahs, postcards, mugs, soaps, slippers and much more. They also stock a seasonal selection and products bearing the museum's own signature print inspired by Swedish-Jewish calico prints produced by Jewish cloth mills.

The museum has free entry on Saturdays between 11am and 12pm to mark Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest.
