Fresh fish takes centre stage at ISSEI Stockholm, where Japanese cuisine meets Peruvian in an exciting Nikkei fusion experience. Both food cultures combine in a menu that's as traditional as it is modern and revolves around fresh ingredients such as lime, chili, shellfish and fish.
One of Stockholm's first Nikkei restaurants, ISSEI is in the Strand Hotel on Nybrokajen. Against a waterfront backdrop, guests can get to know the food culture that emerged when Japanese migrants came to Peru at the end of the 19th century and combined their own flavours with Peruvian ones. The result is dishes where ingredients such as miso, ginger, wasabi and rice vinegar meet sweet chili peppers, yellow peppers, sweetcorn and potatoes.
The recipes have been refined over the generations, developing into something unique that you can now enjoy in modern form at ISSEI, which has an impressively high ceiling with more than 300 lights. The bar is more muted and moody, with subtle lighting and black and white checked floors. Order cocktails made with pisco from Peru and sake from Japan, combined with smaller Nikkei-style snacks.
Pick and choose from snacks, larger dishes and sweet desserts. If you want to make the choice simple for yourself, their omakase - where the chef selects four daily-changing dishes - is the obvious choice. One of them will most probably be ceviche, as it plays a central role in Nikkei cuisine and is the restaurant's signature dish. No matter what dishes you choose, you can pair them with drinks such as sake, wine and South American beer.
