Good value restaurants in Södermalm

Right behind Medborgarplatsen you'll find authentic Indian cooking, with flavours from the country's various regions, some of it made from organic ingredients. Harvest Home feels like a real neighbourhood pub with a welcoming atmosphere and classic menu. As well as meat and fish dishes, there's a selection of vegetarian and vegan options and everything is reasonably priced.

On the corner of Hornsgatan/Ringvägen you'll find Hornsgatan's Kvarterskrog, which welcomes all types of gatherings throughout much of the day. Lunch, brunch, dinner, come in for a drink, stay a while or have a quick glass at the bar – the restaurant has an extensive menu that includes uncomplicated and lovingly prepared dishes with hints from the classic country kitchen, modern Swedish homecooking and Southern Europe.

As you may have guessed, meatballs are the order of the day at Meatballs, prepared with care from farm-raised and mostly organic meat. Settle down for lunch with traditional flavours, or enjoy an entire evening with both food and drinks. The bar serves a wide range of selected wines, craft beers and both classic and Meatball's own cocktails – flavoured to match the meatballs.

Many of their guests come to this neighbourhood pub/restaurant for the beer - but they also serve an exciting menu with its roots in the cuisine of Central Europe. Tuck into a hearty portion of knödel, schnitzel or goulash combined with a good Czech beer. They have some vegetarian options, as well as a dessert menu - also influenced by Central Europe.

Pat Prommeenate's aim with Pat's Place is to showcase the slightly cooler side of Thai food culture. She serves Thai "tapas", or small plates, perfect for sharing and humorously named after films and musical artists. The cheesier elements of old-school Thai restaurants, such as waving cats in the window, are conspicuous by their absence.

In a former glassblowing workshop on Mariatorget, you'll find Hellstens Glashus, which feels like a little corner of New York in Södermalm. The restaurant has an authentic big city vibe with industrial decor, exposed brick walls, and a ceiling height of no less than seven metres. Enjoy a dinner made from scratch with good ingredients, at a lower price than many equivalent Södermalm restaurants. The menu is inspired by classic European dishes, with a couple of more exotic influences. 

Fried chicken, cocktails and craft beer, you will find at Bird. Inspiration comes from Asian and American street food, serving well-prepared sharing food in a relaxed manner. Order one or a few small plates to share around the table.

The two Ramblas tapas restaurants, on Mariatorget and in Hornstull, both go all in with the same classic Spanish tapas concept. The Mariatorget branch is slightly larger, however, with a slightly more advanced menu and a cava bar. As well as tapas, the menu includes paella, and a selection of desserts. Order a jug of sangria to share for an extra authentic touch.

If you love dumplings, you shouldn't miss this little restaurant on Södermannagatan. Fang Yuan Shi Wu is immensely popular for its affordable dumplings that are homemade with authentic flavours. The venue is small and is ideal for takeaway, but there are seating options for anyone who wants to dine in.

This delightful pintxos bar on Mariatorget is great for some nibbles alongside a beer or a glass of wine. Inspired by restaurants in the Basque Country and Barcelona, it offers Spanish tapas such as pimientos de padrón, boquerones and grilled octopus at reasonable prices.

Cosy Ölstugan Tullen serves Swedish beer varieties with a wide selection from local craft breweries, as well as traditional Swedish dishes such as veal meatballs and toast Skagen at a low price. They also have a popular outdoor seating area that's open in the summer.

Pelikan is one of Sweden's oldest restaurants, known for its traditional Swedish cuisine and historical surroundings. In the large beer hall on Blekingegatan, you can enjoy classic dishes such as meatballs, kroppkakor, and pork knuckle without breaking the bank. The meatballs are something of a signature dish that you certainly won't want to miss.

As the name suggests, the popular chickpea dip hummus takes centre stage here. Choose between masses of accompaniments such as lamb sausages, mushrooms, aubergine and much more. Pita bread (with refills) is always included, as well as pickled vegetables.

As the name suggests, it's all about halves here. Half dishes, to be precise. Demi Matbar draws influences from France, Sweden, and other parts of Europe, serving a menu that varies from day to day. Order as much as you feel like and combine it with one of their selected wines.

Taqueria La Neta has long been popular for its budget-friendly Mexican classics served in relaxed surroundings. Tacos, quesadillas, salsa, and guacamole compete for attention on the menu from morning until evening. It works just as well for a lunch with colleagues as for a dinner with friends.
