An authentic Chinese dining experience in Östermalm

If you want to experience genuine Chinese food culture, far from the Swedish version of “four small dishes”, visit Ming on Birger Jarlsgatan. Authentic flavours from China are served at both lunch and dinner, and at the weekend the menu expands with their popular dim sum.

Ming is housed in the Crystal Plaza Hotel, just a few steps from Humlegården, and welcomes both hotel guests and other hungry Stockholmers. The restaurant is simply but pleasantly decorated and divided into different rooms, which contributes to a slightly calmer feeling even when the place is full of families, groups of friends and colleagues socialising over food and drinks. Here and there you'll find Asian motifs and other decor that hint at the type of cuisine.

The menu is filled with authentic dishes that are intended to reflect China's culinary diversity. You'll find everything from wontons and soups to braised meat, wok and vegetarian options. From Friday to Sunday, Ming's popular dim sum is also offered with lots of small dishes, which are best experienced when shared across the table – just like at a real Chinese family dinner. It's also the type of social meal that the restaurant is particularly well suited for. Choosing from all the delicious food isn't easy, but a tip is not to miss the grilled duck, which is one of the restaurant's most talked-about dishes. Lunchtime on weekdays offers a slightly shorter menu with main courses that also contains influences from other parts of Asia. The hotel's breakfast buffet is also served in Ming's dining room.

So lucky to have found this place! Finally a Chinatown-like gem where to eat dim sum during the weekend. They have real shrimp cheung fun (dried and fresh as well as char Sui and sesame) and amazing pork bao (so fluffy!) and for an unbeatable price. They even have chicken feet for the purists (personally not my favourite). Most dishes are SEK 45. With som Jasmin tea, we ate for 2 until we tapped out and paid just over SEK 300 in total.
The downside is the decor. You would think you are back in the early 80s, but hey, most places in the Chinatowns of the world don’t usually look like they were ever blessed by a designer’s touch, so focus on the food ;-) It will just save you a flight abroad. You may find fancier places for dim sum in Stockholm, but this is the first time I found the authentic vibe.
