Kungliga Operan
Opera and ballet in magnificent surroundings
One of Stockholm's most impressive buildings is home to the Royal Opera House, as well as Sweden's national stage for opera and ballet. The repertoire includes both classic and new productions performed in a unique atmosphere.
The original Opera was built on the initiative of the monarch Gustav III and was completed in 1773. The same monarch was shot to death in the opera house in 1792, and exactly 100 years later the house was demolished and made way for the new building that is there today. Over the years, the Opera has been a venue for stage personalities such as Birgit Nilsson, Jussi Björling and Ingmar Bergman.
Every year, a number of productions perform on the Royal Opera's stage – from traditional masterpieces to newly written scripts - in three main areas: opera, dance and activities for children and young people. The building is also home to the Royal Ballet, the Royal Court Chapel and the choir of the Royal Opera.
As well as experiencing opera and ballet, you can take part in guided tours and exhibitions of various kinds, and the building also houses the largest theatre archive in Sweden. You can also settle down in Grodan restaurant, where they serve Swedish-French dishes in beautiful surroundings. Whatever your reason for visiting the Royal Opera House, you shouldn't miss Guldfoaljén, the Golden Foyer, which offers a fairytale atmosphere with crystal chandeliers and gold stucco on the walls.
"If one could give 7 stars!! Here the soul feels its best, and I go there as often as I can. Most of autumn and winter you'll find me here in front of an opera or ballet. The atmosphere, the rooms, the interior design, and the architecture are fantastic; you really get a complete sensory experience with music, art, and history.\n\nThe opera shows good pieces and performances with high quality and feeling; I don't know how many tears have fallen during visits. I am never disappointed.\n\nBefore a performance I would recommend visiting the brasserie as the drinks there are fantastic! There are also several good bars and restaurants in the opera house that are worth visiting.\n\nI can hardly describe the feeling at the opera; it is an experience you must experience yourself, but magical it is!"

"Woooow! First visit to the Opera House, but not the last. Saw the Swan Lake ballet, a magical experience✨ The performance itself is magnificent, with everything from the costumes to the music and the almost inhuman dancing (and I'm completely new to ballet). Additionally, the building is...

There are cheap seats higher up, which many people also say are among the best for a performance. The Golden Foyer is magnificent. Go to...
