Stockholm's loveliest parks

Stockholm's loveliest parks

You're never too far from a peaceful patch of green in Stockholm. The city is dotted with both large well-known parks and small, hidden oases where you can relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. Some of the parks are as lovely in winter as summer, while others really come into their own in the warmer months when you want to spend sunny days in the grass with a book and something good to eat and drink in your picnic basket. We guide you to a range of lovely Stockholm parks - from the green spaces of Vasastan and Östermalm to beautiful vantage points on the heights of Södermalm.

Södermalm

Vitabergsparken

Vitabergsparken is beautifully situated at the highest point of Södermalm, spread out across two hills with fantastic views over the city. The large park has plenty of spaces perfect for spending sunny days outdoors and during the summer months Parkteatern holds open-air theatrical performances here.

Ivar Los Park

One of Stockholm's real hidden gems, Ivar Lo's park is on Mariaberget with views over Riddarfjärden. The park, named after author Ivar-Lo Johansson, has an old-fashioned charm with little wooden animals and playhouses for children to play in. There's a pretty 500m long walking trail just in front of the park that runs parallel with the waterfront.

Tantolunden

This large park area alongside Hornstull and Årstaviken is full of green areas and bathing spots. Walk up the hill and enjoy the famous allotment gardens. Right next door are Drakenbergsparken and Boulebar Tanto, where you can play boules in the open air during the summer months.

Vasastan & Kungsholmen

Vasaparken

Leafy Vasaparken is conveniently located between Odenplan and Sankt Eriksplan and in the summer months it's filled with picnic blankets and park life. There's a football pitch, outdoor gym and playground and, if you want to combine your visit with a little culture, Sven-Harry's Art Museum is also within the park. Pick up something tasty to eat at the museum café Guld.

Tegnérlunden

In the heart of the city, on the border between Vasastan and Stockholm's city centre, you'll find this leafy little oasis, perfect for relaxing in the sunshine on a bench or patch of grass and enjoying a takeaway lunch. The park incudes sculptures of two of Sweden's most famous writers - August Strindberg and Astrid Lindgren - and a children's paddling pool that's filled with water in the summer months.

Vanadislunden

This city centre park in the heart of Vasastan stretches from Sveavägen towards the Sibirien neighbourhood. Take a stroll or grab a spot under the shade of one of the trees - it's a large park and there's plenty of space to find your own hidden corner away from the crowds.

Hagaparken

Idyllic Hagaparken in Solna, which was laid out by King Gustav III in the 18th century, makes for a nice outing at any time of year. Escape the big city hustle and bustle and take long walks in the English-inspired park surroundings with views over the waters of Brunnsviken. Haga is easy to get to from Vasastan and includes a royal palace (where the Crown Princess family lives), Fjärilshuset and other landmarks.

Kungsholmen

Rålambshovsparken

Rålambshovsparken, or Rålis as it's affectionately known, is a real summer magnet for anyone who wants to sunbathe, swim, play boules and enjoy the summer warmth. Beach life and park life go hand in hand at Rålis and you can hire kayaks and SUPs nearby in high season.

Kronobergsparken

You'll find this popular, and slightly hidden-away, park up on a little hill close to Fridhemsplan. With large grassy areas and beautiful trees, it's a lovely spot to bring a picnic or coffee when you're in need of a moment of relaxation. There's also an outdoor gym, games and a dog exercise area.

Östermalm

Humlegården

Humlegården, just a short walk from lively Stureplan, combines peaceful park life with a bit of a party atmosphere. Follow the lead of in-the-know Stockholmers and sit down in the grass with a picnic and a book, or spend the evening enjoying cocktails, food and beer at Humlan or Omnipollos Flora. It would be hard to find a more atmospheric place to spend a summer evening.

Tessinparken

This little park next to Karlaplan is surrounded by functionalist apartment buildings and, in the summertime, colourful flowers. Locals of all ages, with and without dogs, flock to this green space and if you want to work on your tan you definitely won't be alone.

Skeppsholmen Kastellholmen
Skeppsholmen Kastellholmen

Are you looking for a peaceful oasis right in the midst of the big city hustle and bustle? Then don't miss these two picturesque little islands in the centre of Stockholm. Take a stroll along the waterfront or through the trees. You'll also find Moderna Museet – with its own sculpture park - on Skeppsholmen.

Kungsträdgården

Kungsträdgården is probably best known for the various events and festivals that take place here, but plenty of locals and tourists also come here just to enjoy an ice cream and the summer-in-the-city vibes. Visitors flock here in the spring to see the glorious cherry blossoms in bloom and in the winter part of the park is transformed into a popular ice-skating rink.

Djurgården

Kungliga Djurgården

Royal Djurgården is famous for its ancient oaks and its extensive green spaces and parks. Take a walk and see where you end up - there are plenty of picnic spots both along the waterfront and inland. Or just head straight out to idyllic Rosendals Trädgård and relax under one of the apple trees.

Outside the city centre

Vinterviken

Naturally there are masses of lovely parks outside the city too. You'll find one of them south of Södermalm, between Aspudden and Gröndal. Spend the day in the grass, have a coffee at the trädgårdscaféet, have a swim or admire the sunset from the popular rocky area by the water. Alfred Nobel's former dynamite factory is within the park; these days it houses Winterviken Café.

Trekantsparken

An easily accessible park right next to Lake Trekanten near Liljeholmstorgets Galleria shopping centre. Lots of people take a walk here or take a seat in the grass when the sun is shining. If you fancy a swim head to Trekantens strandbad, a little beach with a popular grassy area.
