The best American restaurants in Stockholm

BBQ from Texas and craft beers from Stockholm are the order of the day at Brisket & Friends. Order protein options by weight and combine your main dish with various sauces and sides. In other words, you can adjust your meal, and the bill, according to how hungry you are.

Kommendören takes its inspiration from the bistro culture of New York and the result is a menu with favourite dishes from the coasts of the USA. As well as hearty cuts of meat and lobster tacos, you can expect a social atmosphere akin to an American neighbourhood restaurant.

At Yono Sabo, generous street food is served just like in LA, with a dose of inspiration from Asian cuisines as well. Grilled dishes, burritos, tacos, burgers, and a plethora of delicious snacks, generously topped with sauces and accompaniments, are the order of the day at this stylish bistro.

Popular regulars' haunt with Texas vibes on Österlånggatan in the Old Town. Grill Ruby opened in 1980 and you can enjoy charcoal grilled dishes here, try a really good burger, or round off the week with a substantial weekend lunch. Expect American sides, desserts, and selected cocktails.

On one side: the USA. On the other: Mexico. Food-wise, The Border is right there, on the border between the USA and Mexico. In practice, this means that the menu features a nice mix of burgers, tacos, and burritos. Their burger has also been praised as one of the best in town by burger connoisseurs Burgerdudes.

Chequerboard floors, vinyl-covered chairs, and glowing Coca-Cola signs – Rockin Grill is exactly the kind of 50s diner you see in old American films. They've also been voted one of the city's best burger joints and make their burgers from Swedish meat. As well as burgers, the menu includes milkshakes, loaded fries, and other tasty items. 

The American beer hall Lådan is a popular after-work spot with its delicious street food and impressive selection of beers. There are a total of 150 seats, so there's plenty of space for groups of friends or colleagues wanting to indulge in burgers, chicken wings, “buns & rolls” and twenty beers on tap. All food is made on-site from scratch and the ingredients are carefully selected from small, local suppliers.

The Street Food Labs in Kungsholmen offers its own interpretation of street food, with clear influences from Mexico, Asia, and the USA. In cool surroundings, they serve bowls, burgers, and burritos alongside tropical cocktails, beer, and non-alcoholic options. The place emerged from a desire for unique street food – hence the name, which emphasises their experimentation with flavours.

Asia and America meet at Bird in a menu that revolves around chicken. Primarily fried chicken, but also chicken wings, sandwiches, and hefty sides. Sit in and wash your meal down with something nice, or grab your food to take away.

If you're craving true Texas-style BBQ, get down to Det Arroganta Svinet ("The arrogant pig") in Jordbro south of Stockholm. Tommy Granström opened up the doors to his own garage in the spring of 2018, serving up what he refers to as "Sweden's best Texas BBQ".

This popular branch opened its first location in Stockholm in 1994 and now serves Texan specialties in several locations around the city. Its repertoire includes juicy steaks, ribs, burgers and spicy fajitas.

Burgers are all well and good, and burger lovers' cravings will certainly be satisfied here – but beyond the burgers, Prime Burger & Smokehouse offers a wide menu with everything American. Smoked meats, meat platters, hearty sandwiches and salads are just a few examples of what can be found on the long menu, which also lists plenty of drinks to pair with the food. A smokehouse in the truest sense of the word.

Boston Grill inside Tolv Stockholm has an atmosphere and menu inspired by Boston and New England, featuring a menu full of meat and seafood dishes, and craft beer. The decor with leather sofas and black-and-white baseball photos creates a relaxed vibe where friends and families gather to watch sports and enjoy food and drinks.

The founder of Reco's Chicken and Waffles is originally from Alabama but has played professional basketball in Europe, lived in ten different countries, and thus developed a strong longing for Southern food. This became the foundation of Reco's, where he serves American soul food designed to appeal to both Swedes and Americans.

In a corner spot on Nytorget, you'll find Brickyard, a restaurant and bar with American vibes. The menu consists mainly of grilled meats dishes, burgers, and tacos from American cuisine, but influences from other parts of the world also make their way in. In a nutshell, a little piece of the USA.

Does it get any more American than Hard Rock Cafe? The classic concept has restaurants all over the world, and the Stockholm branch is in Vasastan, close to Stockholm Public Library. The walls are decorated with memorabilia from Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Manson and the menu includes steaks, sandwiches, classic salads and Hard Rock's signature hamburgers. 

It's impossible to miss this lavishly decorated little restaurant on Sankt Eriksplan. Regulars crowd in to eat Cajun food or have a beer and listen to music. Count on plenty of heat (the restaurant lives up to its name) and a lively atmosphere.

It doesn't get much more American than this – the chain was founded in 1958 in Kansas and has since spread across large parts of the world. They're known for their deep-dish pizzas with a thick, soft base, but there are also thinner options, snacks, and milkshakes available.

KFC, or Kentucky Fried Chicken, serves chicken in various forms – from classic chicken pieces to wraps, burgers, and bucket meals, all seasoned with their famous secret spice mix. A popular stop for anyone looking for American-style fast food.
