The best American restaurants in Stockholm

BBQ from Texas and craft beers from Stockholm are the order of the day at Brisket & Friends in Vasastan. Order meat and vegetarian options by weight and combine your main dish with various sauces and sides. In other words, you can adjust your meal, and the bill, according to how hungry you are.

Austin Food Works exudes authentic Americana vibes à la the Deep South intermingled with hickory smoke and Mexican flavours. The restaurant boasts a special guacamole station and the menu features the obligatory fried chicken and Reuben sandwich in a sleek, industrial setting.

Kommendören offers a virtual trip to the Big Apple; the sleek bistro is complete with subway tiles, leather and brass trimmings and a laidback vibe. Vassa Eggen's sister restaurant boasts an impressive East coast menu featuring steaks, lobster tacos and classic brunch favourites such as kale salad, blueberry pancakes and burgers. The bar is a popular haunt after hours.

Seared, a steakhouse with an emphasis on fine cuts of meat and a sociable vibe, is spread out over two floors in Östermalms Saluhall indoor food hall. The dining room on the first floor serves American grilled dishes, while the cocktail bar on the ground floor serves hamburgers, tacos and cocktails with a twist.

Delicious yet simple - that's the concept at BOO Burgers & Barbecue. They cook their burgers using the smash technique and their barbecue dishes are made from scratch and smoked over hickory wood. Wash down your meal with a milkshake, IPA or a glass of wine.

Does it get any more American than Hard Rock Cafe? The classic concept has restaurants all over the world, and the Stockholm branch is in Vasastan, close to Stockholm Public Library. The walls are decorated with memorabilia from Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Manson and the menu includes steaks, sandwiches, classic salads and Hard Rock's signature hamburgers. 

Folkparken on Sveavägen is inspired by neighbourhoods such as Vesterbro in Copenhagen and Brooklyn in New York. Tuck into the wide range of American BBQ-style dishes, washed down with craft beer, in industrial-chic surroundings.

You'll find this lively bar and restaurant in the middle of Skeppbrokajen, packed with nautical vibes and inspiration from the American east and west coasts. The bar is filled with various rums and beers from their own brewery and the menu is a tempting selection of "sea and junk food royal". Tuck into everything from chicken wings to substantial burgers and shakes.

Grill Ruby is a popular melting pot in Gamla Stan. Fusing Texan-vibes with a hint of Mexican spice. Chargrilled meat and indulgent burgers are all part of Grill Ruby's repertoire. Count on American sides, desserts and selected cocktails, such as Texas Margarita. Southern sensibilities dominate the interior and the ambiance.

Owner Adam Mahdi got inspiration for his own smokehouse during trips to the USA. Swedish beef and lamb is smoked and cooked for up to 16 hours at the Sankt Eriksgatan restaurant, and then served with classic sides à la the southern states such as fried potato wedges and sauces. Even the interior has an American theme, with large cartoon pictures of celebrities – designed by Adam himself.

This popular branch opened its first location in Stockholm in 1994 and now serves Texan specialties in several locations around the city. Its repertoire includes juicy steaks, ribs, burgers and spicy fajitas.

If you're craving true Texas-style BBQ, get down to Det Arroganta Svinet ("The arrogant pig") in Jordbro south of Stockholm. Tommy Granström opened up the doors to his own garage in the spring of 2018, serving up what he refers to as "Sweden's best Texas BBQ".

It's impossible to miss this lavishly decorated little restaurant on Sankt Eriksplan. Regulars crowd in to eat Cajun food or have a beer and listen to music. Count on plenty of heat (the restaurant lives up to its name) and a lively atmosphere.
