The Vasa Museum in Djurgården is home to the world-famous Vasa warship, which sank on her maiden voyage in 1628 and was salvaged from Stockholm harbour in 1961. You can see the ship here in all her glory and explore exhibitions about Vasa's history and the life of people who lived at that time.

The current Vasa Museum opened in 1990, almost 30 years after the ship was lifted out of Stockholm harbour. Thousands of visitors from all over the world come to see the iconic ship, which has been transformed from a monumental failure at the time of its sinking to a huge success as a tourist attraction. Several decades have been spent restoring and preserving Vasa, which is now the world's best preserved 17th century ship.

You can see the ship close-up in the museum, and do a deep dive into the history of Vasa with exhibitions about how the ship was built, sailed and sank, as well as how it was salvaged more than 300 years later. You can also learn more about the people connected to Vasa and the ship's 700 or so sculptures and ornaments; important symbols designed to evoke both admiration and fear at the time.

In addition to the exhibitions visitors can take part in a wide programme of events, from talks to concerts with a connection to Vasa and the period in which it was built.

If you're hungry or just fancy a coffee, the museum has a restaurant serving Swedish homecooking and cakes and pastries.

Sweden's tourist trap No. 1. Sweden's largest flop through all times. "-Yes, we are building a museum about it, so all other countries can see how bad we are at building boats and preparing for war."
