Stockholm's best bar food

French fries with bearnaise sauce are all well and good - but at Pom Friterie they've taken it upon themselves to raise the humble chip to new heights. They do this with fresh, organic, hand-cut fries that have been honed to perfection over several years and served with toppings and sauces with flavours from around the world. You can also choose from a selection of fried croquettes with dips. The drinks list includes cocktails, beer and wine.

One of the best things about bars is of course their atmosphere. Slightly more laid-back than the restaurant section, livelier and chummier. At the classic Stockholm restaurant Riche, which has provided Stockholmers with a communal sitting room for more than a century, Lilla Baren ("the little bar") serves up a great atmosphere, as well as awesome music and one of the most beautiful ceilings in the city (!). Here, the atmosphere and anecdotes are part of the furniture. Also part of the furniture is the menu that hangs behind the bar and offers everything from light snacks to a plat du jour. The hamburger is a must.

Good drinks, tasty nibbles and great company are perhaps most synonymous with the Spaniards' tapas. So it's a good thing the city centre has its own plaza with modern tapas. With the bar in the centre and high tables placed around it, Boqueria's square in MOOD Stockholm is a meeting place from lunchtime until late evening. Sate your appetite with the stew of the day or order a selection of pintxos, charcuterie or cheeses depening on your taste and mood.

Wine and cocktails are not the only things served at the bar at Proseccobaren in the heart of the city. Order Italian small dishes such as pizza al tegamino, a dish that's become something of a signature dish for the bar. The owners also run Cavabaren in the same neighbourhood.

Choose from a selection of ambitious pub-grub dishes at British pub The Churchill Arms in Vasastan, best combined with a beer. The bar stocks 28 types of beer on tap and even more by the bottle. The menu includes dishes such as fish and chips and hamburgers, alongside Toast Skagen and prawn salad. Stop by for a post-work drink, or make a date for their next popular quiz night.

Riggan, formerly Bistro Rigoletto, doesn't have a separate bar menu, but the cocktail bar and restaurant go hand in hand here. The atmosphere gets more and more lively throughout the evening and usually ends up with a proper party. Take a seat at one of the bistro tables or get comfy in a large sofa and order in some small plates or a classic main course.

Award-winning bartender Johan Evers and rising star Oscar Drigoris are behind this ambitious cocktail bar on Grev Turegatan. Light meals and snacks are served as a complement to their craft cocktails, beers and non-alcoholic drinks.

You'll find some of the best sandwiches in the city at Katarina Ölkafé on Södermalm. Since they opened in 2014, they've sated numerous hungry bellies with their filling pastrami and reuben sandwiches with American-inspired sides like mac 'n' cheese. And the drinks? Well, it's called a beer café for a reason. You'll find everything from local beers to well-chosen bottles from all over the world. 

The classic restaurant Tranan on Odenplan has been a popular Stockholm hangout since 1929 (!). In the busy bar in the basement music's played, and drinks and simple, traditional Swedish dishes are served. If you're craving the best meatballs in the city, "isterband" smoked pork sausage, cured salmon or "strömmingsflundra" dill-stuffed herring fillets this is the place to come. It's a slice of Swedish cultural history, too; much of the  typical brewery-owned furniture you'll find at Tranan has been there since it opened and the poet Nils Ferlin used to be a regular.
