The best cafés outside Stockholm city centre

The stone oven in the cellar of the old waterworks next to Lake Kottla in Lidingö is fired up and ready to bake all day. Buns, bread and croissants are baked from scratch, using artisanal skills, top quality ingredients and a hefty dose of love. The freshly baked goodies are then served in the on-site café and at their sister branch at Näset, just a few kilometres away.

The most-hyped (and possibly trendiest) café south of Stockholm city centre, you'll find this ambitious spot just a few steps from Telefonplan and Konstfack art colleage. At weekends it draws in large crowds of in-the-know coffee lovers for breakfast, lunch and fika.

Food lover Maryam Rydén, who runs both Park Café and the award-winning Viggbyholm station café, believes in baking with your heart and soul. Everything here is baked right next door to the café and the kitchen makes classic café dishes such as salads, lasagne and quiche.

The café at Steninge Bruk is inside a converted barn in the grounds of Steninge castle, around half an hour outside town. Choose from a selection of freshly-baked cakes and pastries and food cooked over a large wood-fired grill, and combine your visit with a stroll around the grounds.

Robin Delselius bakery is a neighbourhood bakery with that extra special something. They don't compromise on quality and bake everything by hand from scratch, using carefully-selected ingredients. Enjoy breakfast and lunch in the cosy, welcoming bakery. There are also heaps of delicious sweet treats to choose from, from freshly-baked buns to buttery croissants, pastries and cakes.

The name - which means “my café” - of these two establishments reveals their aim: to be a friendly, personal meeting place for coffee and more. The two branches, in Solna and Barkarby, serve breakfast all day, as well as hearty lunch salads, sandwiches and soups and - the icing on the cake - really good coffee. Their coffee is made from beans from Lykke Kaffegårdar, which don't just taste good, they also do good, thanks to their partnership with coffee farmers. There are gyms right next to the cafés and n Solna there's also a co-working space. 

Enskede's charming neighbourhood  transforms into a lively café at the weekend, where you can come for a coffee break as well as breakfast. Home-baked bread, rolls, pastries, and other delicious treats are available to take home or enjoy on the spot, perhaps alongside a freshly brewed coffee. If you want to treat yourself a little extra, you can indulge in the breakfast buffet.

This beautifully situated art space on the island of Värmdö serves homemade desserts, cakes and pastries in Bådan Café & Konditori on the second floor. Combine a visit to an exhibition with a stop for coffee with the beautiful Stockholm archipelago as your backdrop.

A must for anyone with high-end sugar cravings. This café and bakery in Hammarby sjöstad is run by high profile pastry chef Magnus Johansson, who has created desserts for the Nobel banquets and raises patisserie to an art form. There are only a few tables, but if it's not too busy you can sit and enjoy a fika on-site.

Take a walk out to Vinterviken and satisfy your coffee and cake cravings at Markus Aujalay's popular café in what was once Alfred Nobel's dynamite factory. It's rustic and gorgeous here and in the summer months, a dip off the rocks is just a short walk away.

Take a trip out to Drottningholm and have a coffee right next to the royal palace. Karamellan serves coffee, cakes and pastries as well as classic hot dishes, beer and wine. Eat and drink in charming surroundings with views over the water and grounds.

Linnea's in Tyresö Strand serves everything from sweet pastries to salads, hearty quiches, sandwiches and pre-ordered special occasion cakes. Organic, locally-produced and craftsmanship are the watchwords here. Linnea, the owner, is a previous winner of the Swedish equivalent of the Great British Bake Off Junior, and is now living her dream running her own café. Drop by to eat lunch or just enjoy a coffee and cinnamon bun.

Solna is worth a visit for anyone who fancies a coffee, acai bowl, smoothie, salad or some other healthy treat. Everything at this trendy café is homemade and freshly baked, not to mention organic and vegetarian.

Gelato, pizza, salads and sandwiches. Edsviken in Sollentuna is a small family-run ice cream bar and restaurant where all food is made on site from fresh ingredients. Even the gelato, which the owner is an expert is made here and comes in many refreshing flavours. Choose whether to sit inside the café or out on the large terrace.

Homemade food and homebaked cakes and pastries are served in this former apothecarist's residence in Upplands Väsby. Enter the old wooden villa and take a seat for lunch or coffee and cake. Hang out, read a book or play a board game. In warmer weather you can sit in the leafy garden. The menu includes simple lunch dishes such as lasagne and you'll always find gluten-free, lactose-free and vegan options.

18th century Svindersviks Gård is tucked away on the waterfront just a short walk from Sickla Köpkvarter shopping district. They serve a classic lunch and coffee with handmade cakes and pastries in the summer café, and when autumn comes they lay out an apple cake buffet. Combine your visit with a walk in their beautiful gardens.

Café Villa Ed is housed in a unique wooden villa in Upplands Väsby built in 1948. They serve homebaked bread and pastries from their own bakery along with simple lunch dishes such as salads and open sandwiches. After eating you can explore the rest of the villa which is home to several shops and activities.

Färgfabriken, tucked away in a former industrial area near Liljeholmen, houses an art gallery and an organic café. They serve lunch, brunch and fika with an emphasis on locally-produced and organic ingredients. Enjoy the light, airy premises with its high ceilings, or the charming outdoor area in good weather.
