The guide to Stockholm's best bakeries

An authentic little homebakery and café in Kungsholmen where everything is made to their own recipes. Have a coffee or lunch, or buy some bread or cardamom buns to take home with you. Why not buy a breakfast roll and coffee to take into work with you, or stop off along your Saturday stroll?

Valhallabageriet is well known for its popular sourdough bread, but also for the delicious buns and pastries. The bakery has grown over the years and opened up more branches, but you'll find the original here on Valhallavägen in Östermalm.

Fredrik Ekman and Håkan Johansson Frost, Sweden's only world champions in baking, are the guys behind this organic artisan bakery housed in Tullhus 1, a former customs house. They grind their own wholemeal flour on site here and bake sourdough bread and buns using only organic ingredients. Skeppsbro Bageri is also a popular café with views over the water.

This little bakery on Rörstrandsgatan has become a real favourite among bread and pastry-mad Stockholmers. Queues can get long, but it's worth the wait if you're craving really good sourdough bread, delicious buns and, of course, semlor Lenten buns when they're in season.

Artisanal baking is what Thelins does best. For more than a hundred years they've been baking everything from rolls, loaves and traditional sandwich cakes to buns, pastries and gateaux. Everything is baked locally in their Gröndal bakery and delivered to their Kungsgatan branch, where you can enjoy coffee and something to eat in contemporary yet classic café surroundings with a warm, welcoming feel.

The charming French bakery and café a stone's throw from Norr Mälarstrand became a firm favourite as soon as it opened around a decade ago. With a love of the art of baking, French classics and a warm, friendly atmosphere you can't go far wrong. They make everything from top-notch loaves to French vanilla pastries, croissants and cakes here.

Bullar&Bröd opened on Valhallavägen in the autumn of 2017 and its run by award-winning baker Gabriel di Grado toghether with Linda Aving. Bread, buns, cakes, pastries, biscuits and other freshly-baked goodies with all-natural ingredients and no additives are baked here. You can also sit and have a coffee on site. Bullar & Bröd came first place in Thatsup's semla test in both 2019 and 2020.

With star chef Mathias Dahlgren running the show, it's not surprising Green Rabbit on Tegnérgatan has become a firm favourite. The emphasis is on rye bread, baked using traditional techniques and new ideas and the result is incredibly popular. Pick up a loaf or some pastries or sit and eat breakfast or lunch on site.

Tössebageriet has been selling freshly-baked bread to loyal customers since 1920. And since 1996, award-winning konditor Mattias Ljungberg has been in charge of the bakery. You'll find bread and pastries of all descriptions here. Cakes, buns, bread, biscuits... Don't miss the experience of enjoying breakfast outside Tösses on a sunny summer's day.

A true treasure trove on charming Riddargatan that not everyone knows about. The counter is filled to the brim with a huge range of cakes, buns, rolls and sourdough loaves. Stay for breakfast or stock up on bread for the weekend.

Ritorno has been baking since 1959, making it one of the older bakeries on the Stockholm scene. They have a , shop and konditori and their Odengatan café is one of the few original Stockholm cafés that still exist in the city.

Skellefteå-based Svedjan also has a branch in Zinkensdamm, and the baking skills they've brought with them from northern Sweden are extremely popular with Södermalm locals. You'll find a small but ambitious selection of buns, bread and cakes baked using Swedish flour. Everything is baked in batches throughout the day to ensure its as fresh as possible. The bakery also grind their own wholemeal flour using a stone mill.

With the best ingredients such as real cream and pure butter the knots of dough transform into golden brown buns and fresh loaves of bread at Grillska Huset - Bakery and Breadshop, run by homeless charity Stockholms Stadsmission. Enjoy homemade bread whilst doing something good for society.

At this classic café in Näsbypark Centrum they're busy baking from early morning to late afternoon. Their baked goods, both sweet and savoury, are made from carefully selected ingredients and with a generous dose of love. Food lover Maryam Rydén, who runs both Park Café and White Guide-awarded Viggbyholm's station café, is passionate about putting her heart and soul into her baking. 

The classic konditori Vete-Katten has been around since 1928 offering everything you could want in the way of bread and pastries. They have a traditional coffee room and a light, airy bread counter. Everything is baked from scratch from top quality ingredients and they sell everything from freshly baked loaves to cookies, pastries, buns and homemade chocolates.

Award-winning konditor and master-baker Magnus Johansson and his wife are behind this bakery in Hammarby Sjöstad, where you can buy bread and even learn more about baking here. The aim is to offer an uber-Swedish bakery using all the best elements of Swedish baking traditions.

The well-known stone-oven bakery Fabrique quickly found it's way into Stockholmers' hearts, and they can now proudly boast numerous outlets around the city (and even in London). They're particularly well known for their popular levain bread, but also their buns and generously-filled sandwiches.

Dating from 1937, this classic bakery proudly bakes bread according to traditional, French-inspired recipes. Gateau, which can be found at various addresses around Stockholm, is often associated with cakes and pastries but also its famous sourdough bread.

If you're on the hunt for bread or pastries and happen to be in the Saltsjöbaden area, or are up for an outing, drop by Vår Gård. You can check in and spend the night here, or just visit for the day. Drop in for breakfast, eat lunch, enjoy a glass of wine or book dinner in the restaurant. All the bread they serve is freshly baked on site each morning and you can buy it to take home with you from the bakery.

If you've spent any time at all in Stockholm recently you can't have missed Bröd & Salt. The orange/purple chain is baking like never before - but despite their size they've managed to retain their artisanal roots. As the name suggests, they bake both sweet and savoury treats here - including buns, bread, cookies and pizzas.

Only visitors to, and locals of, the island of Utö previously got to enjoy Tobias Bergstrand's buns and breads. The baker, a member of the Swedish national baking team, has now opened a bakery on Frejgatan with his wife Sara, to the great joy of everyone living in Vasastan.
