Where to find Stockholm's best cinnamon buns

The island of Utö isn't the only place you can enjoy Bergstrand's buns – they also have a bakery on Frejgatan near Odenplan. Tobias Bergstrand, head baker, is on the Swedish national baking team. Bergstrands cinnamon buns took first place in Thatsup's major cinnamon bun taste test in 2023. 

A real classic konditori which has gained a great deal of attention in recent years for their innovative semla wrap. They also have plenty of delicious cinnamon buns, baked from the finest ingredients - so good, in fact, that they won first place in Thatsup's annual cinnamon bun test 2020.

In the middle of Skeppsbron you'll find the winner of Thatsup's 2019 ultimate cinnamon bun taste test. 34 buns were judged on their appearance and flavour before Skeppsbro Bageri's bun, which is 100 per cent organic, was chosen as the winner.

You're never far from one of Bröd & Salt's branches in Stockholm. As well as delicious cinnamon and cardamom buns, this popular bakery and café chain sells moist almond buns and vegan cinnamon buns. Bröd & Salt's cinnamon buns won Thatsup's major cinnamon bun taste test in 2022.

For an exceptionally moist cinnamon bun, head down to Thelins konditori on Kungsgatan. And it's not surprising they've mastered the art of a top-notch bun - they've had more than a hundred years of practice. They also bake cinnamon buns locally in their bakery in Gröndal, from natural ingredients.

Popular Vallentuna Stenugnsbageri make their buns using a sourdough culture they started in the summer of 1997. Buns are baked in a stone oven for a perfect result.

This café and bakery is surrounded by enchanting woodlands next to Lake Kottla in Lidingö. They bake buns constantly, always fresh and made from scratch from top-quality ingredients. Vattenverket's secret is always to bake their buns and bread in the same stone oven, giving them a characteristic flavour.

This little bakery on Valhallavägen is famous for their delicious sourdough bread as well as their popular cinnamon and cardamom buns. A must for bun fans.

Park Café in Näsbypark Centrum is an oasis in classic café style. Everything revolves around their love for the craft of baking, and everything is baked right next to the café, from early morning until well into the afternoon. Including their moist cinnamon buns, which are made in the traditional way.

Star pastry chef Daniel Roo's bakery took home the winning spot in the 2018 Thatsup cinnamon bun taste test. "Moist", "buttery" and "beautiful" were some of the comments from the jury who voted for the attractively presented favourite.

If you find yourself in Norra Djurgårdsstaden and can smell the aroma of freshly baked cakes and pastries? Then you're probably getting close to Granero Bakery. This local bakery's passion for flavours and seasonal ingredients earned them a top spot in Thatsup's cinnamon bun test 2023. During the summer months, you can even enjoy your cinnamon bun with a generous scoop of homemade gelato. 

The queue for the rustic artisan bakery Lillebrors Bageri on Rörstrandsgatan stretches around the block. This little hole-in-the-wall spot bakes cinnamon buns all day long and sells them fresh over the counter. In autumn 2021 the bakery moved into a larger premises on the same street.

Saturnus serves what are probably the largest - and most talked-about - buns in Stockholm. This French-influenced café has been serving the gigantic cinnamon buns for years and they've become something of a signature pastry.

A cosy konditori in Solna which sells a wide range of breads, pastries, cakes and ice cream. Everything is completely lactose-free. They are dog-friendly and they even have doggy ice cream on the menu. Kosterheds took home second place in Thatsup's cinnamon bun test in 2020.

This classic konditori on Odengatan has been serving cakes and pastries with views over Vasa Park since the Thirties. Their own bakery on Dalagatan sells freshly baked bread and other pastries from early in the morning.

When Kronobageriet shut up shop in 1958 buns and bread had been baked there for more than 300 years. The bakery was known as Stora Bageriet (The Big Bakery) and when the present owner opened up this bakery in the same building it was a natural choice to call it Stora Bageriet. The sweet smell of buns and bread wafts down Sibyllegatan once again.

The bakers at Bullar & Bröd bake bread and pastries every day using all-natural ingredients. Have a coffee, eat lunch or breakfast in the café or buy some bread to take home with you. In 2019 they won the prize for "Best semla" (Lenten bun) in Thatsup's taste test and the same year they were nominated for a prestigious Gulddraken award for best café.

Pocket Café by Pontus, Pontus Frithiof's café concept in French bistro style. You'll find light dishes such as salads, takeaway dishes and, naturally, a selection of cakes and pastries. It's worth mentioning that their cinnamon bun took home second place in Thatsup's ultimate bun test 2019.

Yet another popular classic café where the counters are packed with gorgeous loaves of bread and traditional cinnamon and cardamom buns. Buy a bun to take home with you or find a seat in one of the elegant salons and enjoy a coffee on site.

Svedjan started more than ten years ago in Skellefteå with an ambitious selection of buns and bread, before moving to a small premises on Brännkyrkagatan and then to a slightly larger premises, in Pane Vino's former premises. They make everything with a large dose of love and skill, from the choice of ingredients to the finished product. 

Cosy café and bakery in Lidingö with a spacious outdoor serving area that serves masses of breads and rolls, cakes and other delicious little pastries. Their cakes vary according to the seasons and they often try out new innovative creations.

Pastries, cakes, bread - at Linneas Pâtisserie, Café & Konditori there's a wide range of fantastic baked goods in all shapes and sizes. Naturally fresh cinnamon buns, baked with sourdough and Swedish butter, are part of the selection. Linnea, who started the eponymous café, is a previous winner of the Swedish equivalent of Great British Bake Off junior and she's now living her dream - creating cinnamon buns, pastries, magnificent cakes and more.

If you're in the mood for really fabulous cinnamon buns and find yourself close to one of Tegnérs bakeries, duck inside at once. The artisanal bakery makes everything themselves and they're passionate about ensuring everything both tastes good and looks beautiful. 

Green Rabbit is star chef Mathias Dahlgren's bakery in Vasastan, selling Danish-style smörrebröd open sandwiches and, of course, a selection of breads, pastries and buns in a range of tasty variations. One for the connoisseurs.

Chain bakeries shouldn't be dismissed out of turn. On the contrary, Fabrique sells consistently excellent sourdough bread and cinnamon buns - and with branches all over Stockholm you never have to travel too far to find one.
