Historic theatre with a wide repertoire

This historic theatre on the corner of Wallingatan and Västmannagatan dates back to 1915, when the premises first opened as a cinema. These days you can visit Scalateatern for plays, shows, musical performances and standup - or simply a glass of wine in the bar.

The spirit still lives on inside Scalateatern, in the form of interior design inspired by the years between 1920 and 1960. Heavy velvet drapes, crystal chandeliers and bookshelves are interspersed with patterned wallpaper, black and white photographs and other period details.

The venue houses several different parts; as well as the theatre lounge itself, there's a bar where you can have a glass of wine or a cocktail, and where the box office used to be, you can now find the Bakfickan restaurant, which serves Swedish-French dishes in a modern format from early to late at night. Everyone from theatregoers to actors, musicians, comedians and outside guests from the local area gather here to socialise over a bite to eat.

The programme for the main stage is wide-ranging and includes fast-paced revues, dramatic portrayals and concerts – and more. Those drawn to swinging tunes and hilarious humor can head down to the basement of the Scalateatern, whose schedule lists live performances by various jazz bands and artists, as well as the occasional stand-up act. It is also home to the recurring jazz club Lönnkrogen, which exudes Prohibition-era live jazz and a secret bar that opens in the restrooms during the interval…
