Celebrate midsummer in Stockholm

Celebrate midsummer at Skansen over three days. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday you can enjoy masses of different activities for visitors young and old. Dance around the maypole, make a wreath, enjoy folk music, dancing and storytelling or just enjoy the leafy surroundings. The market is open and food and drink can be bought at several spots around the park.

Mosebacketerrassen has always been a popular option for anyone wanting to stay in town to celebrate midsummer. This year, young and old alike can dance and sing to Små grodorna (The little frogs) and other classic midsummer songs. There will also be face painting, balloon animals and other fun games and activities. Stay all evening and watch the sunset before you go home.

In leafy Vintervikens trädgård just outside the city centre, you can enjoy traditional midsummer celebrations with dancing around the maypole and midsummer food in the café. Join in dressing the maypole, take a turn around the said pole, eat a midsummer plate with all the classics, or simply enjoy the sun and the scent of flowers in the air.

Celebrate midsummer in traditional style in delightful Hågelby park in Tumba with dancing round the maypole, wreath making and fun and games. Festivities for all ages.

It would be hard to find a more idyllic place to celebrate midsummer than at Herrängens Gård. Take part in traditional celebrations on the bandstand, with raising of the maypole and dancing round the pole. The café serves pickled herring, prawn sandwiches, cakes and pastries, ice cream and hot and cold drinks. If the weather's being kind you can also enjoy a dip from the nearby jetty.  

Rönninge by in Täby, a show farm and rural community centre, organises a traditional midsummer celebration complete with wreath making, dancing around the maypole, barn dancing, musical entertainment, dance performances, and games for children. There will also be coffee for sale, pony rides, and other activities, and the local heritage museum and handicraft cottage will be open.

This may not be a very traditional Midsummer celebration, but it still includes important elements like a cheerful summer atmosphere, games, music and food. The party takes place on Midsummer's Day and Miss Petersson, Miss Starshine and DJ Leo B will be running the show, promising a day of “full rulle kanelbulle” with a quiz walk, hula-hoop bonanza, limbo, high-heel race – and lovely prizes for the winners. First come, first served, but there's plenty of room here.

If you want to celebrate midsummer in the archipelago, there are plenty of options. 

You can take a bus or boat to Lägret in Vaxholm, where you can enjoy midsummer food, ring dances and an overnight stay. 

In Sandhamn, the midsummer festivities kick off at Adolfs torg at 3 pm with traditional games and dancing for both adults and children. 

On the island of Grinda there will be a traditional celebration with a maypole, troubadours and dinner at Grinda Wärdshus. From 8pm-2am there will be a party with DJ Leo B with friends serving up “fun hits, singalongs and skylarking.”

On the dance floor on Möja island there will be a pentathlon, hamburgers, folk music and a disco.

Torekällberget open-air museum in Södertälje celebrates midsummer with folk dancing, games and other fun activities for the whole family. The maypole will be raised at 3pm, followed by dancing around it. 

Lean back, relax and enjoy traditional midsummer food. Villa Godthem has put together a classic midsummer menu with pickled herring, new potatoes, steak and - naturally - strawberries with vanilla ice cream. You can also book drinks packages. Eat in the salon or outside in the garden.

Sturehof is famously open every day of the year, including Midsummer. They host a traditional Midsummer celebration with a three-course menu à la Sturehof. It consists of pickled herring, grilled monkfish and midsummer cake. Naturally, chilled snaps is also served.

Traditions are taken extremely seriously at Ulla Winbladh and midsummer is no exception. Celebrate this year's midsummer out on Djurgården with a menu that includes all the classic midsummer flavours, including strawberry cake for dessert. Guests are welcomed by staff in hand-tied flower garlands.

Restaurant Eld, the rustic restaurant at The Viking Museum, is serving a midsummer menu over three days. Tuck into a hearty grill platter with homemade sausage, venison, flank steak, grilled vegetables, gremolata, béarnaise sauce, new potatoes tossed with dill, and a mixed salad with smoked feta, and finish with a summery dessert, all on beautiful Djurgården. Visit the museum while you're there or go for a walk along the water. Table bookings recommended.

This Djurgården hotel invites you to a day with maypoles, singing, dancing, and flower garlands. The midsummer menu consists of updated classics such as a pickled herring buffet, grilled beef or seared char and Strawberry Mess. 

At Restaurant Reisen in the Old Town, midsummer is celebrated for three days with a special summery menu. For starters, there's pickled herring, followed by gravad lax for the main course, and for dessert, strawberry pavlova. As the icing on the cake, a pairing drink is also recommended for each dish. Celebrate the arrival of summer at Riche, where they'll be holding a flower exhibition featuring blooms from their own gardens at Ulriksdals Värdshus. Throughout the period, 16–21 June, a menu of classic midsummer dishes is served. Cocktails with summery flavours are also shaken and stirred.

Nestled in greenery in Solna, Ulriksdal Inn is just waiting for midsummer. The day is celebrated here with a traditional midsummer buffet filled with herring, salmon, hot dishes and a summery dessert. There will also be celebrations in the garden, with accordion music, dancing around the maypole and midsummer wreaths. If the weather's bad, the celebrations will take place indoors.

Celebrate Midsummer's Eve at Stockholm Stadshotell with a traditional lunch of herring, new potatoes, soured cream and dill – and of course aquavit. A little later, a grilled dinner is served with turbot or beef fillet straight off the grill and served with new potatoes. For dessert there's a fruit galette with whipped cream. Southern European vibes flow in the slightly tucked-away courtyard, and you can also prolong the holiday feeling and spend the night at the hotel.

High above the rooftops, Gondolen celebrates midsummer with a menu themed around Swedish summer. After canapés, there's pickled herring and salmon with classic accompaniments for the starter, grilled fillet of beef for the main course, and strawberries with vanilla ice cream for dessert. All enjoyed to the sounds of live jazz, 33 metres above the ground.

Rooftop bar Pelago wants to create a celebration that feels like home for everyone staying in town. Expect live music with Isak Hedtjärn and Gustav Ejstes, a maypole right in the middle of the terrace, and midsummer flavours you can wash down with a schnapps or another tasty drink. They'll be serving a three-course menu in Pergolan with herring, grilled dishes and soft-serve ice cream. Elsewhere on the terrace, they serve, among other things, herring and fried herring sandwiches – all with views over Stockholm.

For the thirtieth year in a row, M/S Vindhem will be setting out on a midsummer cruise. Onboard, there will be a prawn feast with unlimited freshly baked bread, aioli and butter, or alternatively, tacos with minced meat and traditional toppings, while the archipelago in her summer plumage slowly passes by. After dinner, Månsson Allstars and Micke D will provide musical entertainment.

In leafy Hagaparken, Stallmästaregården restaurant and hotel is right next to the waters of Brunnsviken. Enjoy traditional midsummer fare for lunch or dinner, take a stroll through the beautiful surroundings and savour the tranquillity close to the city. The menu features toast Skagen or pickled herring to start, entrecôte or seared pike-perch for the main course, and fresh strawberries with whipped cream for dessert. To top it all off, pairing drinks are also recommended for each course.

If you want to go all-in on midsummer, take a trip out to Djurönäset in the archipelago and celebrate with a summery supper in the restaurant and overnight stay in the hotel. Take part in the traditional midsummer celebrations in the public park or simply relax in the hotel's spa.
