Design restaurants with cool concepts in Stockholm

AG is often named as one of the best meat restaurants in the city, but as well as ambitious cooking and juicy steaks, it also has a totally unique locale. The building once housed a silversmith's workshop and the industrial feel has been preserved with concrete floors, bistro tiling and leather details. If you really want to luxe it up a notch, book the "chef's table", where you sit quite literally in the kitchen.

Brasserie Balzac takes its inspiration from the classic restaurants of New York and Paris. Authentic bistro vibes ooze from the elegant stucco ceilings, leather sofas and brass details as well as an old-school bar which stretches the entire length of the wall. The ambitious kitchen embraces French cuisine with both classic and more contemporary dishes. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious - the idea is that you should be able to just drop in on a whim, in the French manner.

Chef duo Adam and Albin's Solen was designed in collaboration with selected architects to become a social meeting place with the sun and fire at the centre. The industrial venue is structured like a solar system, where unpainted wooden furniture revolves around the open fire that crackles in the middle of the restaurant. Flavours from Tel Aviv, Naples, Santa Fe and Oaxaca are served in both small and large formats, alongside innovative cocktails and natural wines.

Moody lighting, colourful interiors, graffitied walls, plants and wooden details. Welcome to Tokyo! You're met at the entrance by a vintage arcade game and a large, light-reflecting staircase with glass walls. Eat Japanese ramen, bao and gyoza and drink sake in unique surroundings totally unlike anything you usually see in Sweden.

Continental vibes abound at Restaurang Pava, which goes all-in on the Art Deco style, wth marbled, chequered floors, soft velvet furniture in bright colours, large paintings on the walls and warm lighting. Sink down into one of the sofas around the bar for a cocktail or take a seat in the dining room for a dinner with flavours from all over the world.

Dirty Coco's unique premises are decorated in shades of pink with more than 11,000 flowers covering the walls and ceiling. The menu reflects the sugar-sweet theme with masses of decadent desserts, milkshakes and crêpes.

Around the corner from Rolfs Kök is this nautical sister restaurant, whose menu lists a wide range of goodies from the big blue. Slip in for a Continental-style date with wine and a couple of oysters, or spend an entire evening enjoying hot and cold dishes. The premises are stylish and industrial, with details that hint at the restaurant's piscine theme.

Florentine invites you into a colourful trattoria that oozes Seventies Italian vibes, complete with large sofa groups, an open kitchen and Roman statues. Spread out over 500 square metres, the restaurant has around 200 seats and a 360-degree cocktail bar from where you can take in the glamorous Italo disco-era atmosphere.

What happens when you combine the food culture and restaurants of Stockholm, Asia, and New York? You get Misshumasshu, a 'mishmash' of flavours and influences from the three areas. Misshumasshu is well-known restaurant duo Adam & Albin's bistro in Birger Jarlspassagen arcade, a vibrant meeting place where classic bistro elements like mosaic flooring and wooden furniture meet interesting cuts and colours.

Bar Afterglow may have an enticing cocktail menu, but the venue itself is also worth a visit in its own right. Surrounded by pastel pink walls, the tiled turquoise bar stretches out, and green potted plants, retro-style furniture, and other charming features are scattered throughout. Thoughtful doesn't even begin to cover it, but the atmosphere still manages to be unpretentious - think a relaxed neighbourhood bar, but with really great cocktails and pairing snacks. 

As soon as you step into Pas d'Art you're met by a cosmopolitan atmosphere of artworks, patterned floors and ceilings and large Art Deco-style wall murals. Take a pew in the swanky bar and watch the scene, or get snug in one of the velvet banquettes as you enjoy the French bistro food.

Mysticism is a recurring theme when it comes to both the cocktails and the decor at Pharmarium, which was Sweden's first apothecary shop in the 1500s. The name and interiors reflect the building's rich history and the ancient art of apothecary influences both the bar's design and their cocktails' ingredients.

Right on the waterfront, overlooking Vasabron bridge and the Parliament House, is Tegelbacken. If you're looking for a colour explosion, Tegelbacken is the place with its pink tones, warm atmosphere, and inviting velvet furniture. The restaurant also includes a pink lounge with a bar, and carefully curated European-inspired sharing plates are served in the dining room.

Brutalisten has an uncompromising concept when it comes to food: only one ingredient per dish, and only water and salt may be added. But it's not just the food that has a brutalist philosophy, the interior follows the same style. The restaurant is small but has high ceilings, is colourful and is decorated with raw materials that contrast with the playful ceiling.

Capricci on Hornstulls strand takes guests on a mini gastronomic trip to Italy. Step into the dynamic space with black-and-white checked floors, large seating groups and leafy potplants hanging from the ceiling. You can also take a seat at the long marble bar and order a cocktail while you take in the atmosphere.

Danyel Couet, who used to run the F12 group of restaurants, was inspired by his French grandmother when he opened Bar Allegrine. The restaurant is both classic and modern at the same time - pared-back, stylish and chic are the watchwords here, with playful elements such as the wall murals. French elegance in a contemporary package, quite simply.

Next to the Katarinahuset building, home to the classic restaurant Gondolen, is Café Klotet. There two kitchen bars and a round 'community table', framed by the spectacular views from the twelfth floor. The aim here is to combine food, music, and art, with design elements such as a madonna sculpture that's filled with fresh vegetables every day.

When Hellstens Glashus opened in 2016, there was quite a bit of talk about the restaurant's new design. They transformed a former glassblowing workshop into an impressive dining room with exposed brick walls, a ceiling height of seven metres, and an ornate bar. Add to that, comfortable leather armchairs and personal souvenirs that the owner, ethnographer Per Hellsten, has brought back from his travels around the world. Come here for a full dinner or relaxed drinks at the bar.

Lovers of luxury and elegance will appreciate both the interiors and the gastronomy at Noi. The restaurant was specially designed by Wingårdhs architects and created from natural materials such as leather from Tärnsjö, walnut wood, mosaics and marble. Cognac, saffron yellow and dark green tones create an intimate atmosphere for delightful dinners. 

Influences from a living room in Åkersberga combine with 1970s LA vibes, with wood panelling, wall-to-wall carpets, subdued lighting, and vinyl-clad booths. The menu consists of vegetarian dishes in various sizes, suitable for both dinner and post-work drinks and snacks.

Sin Ramen Slaughterhouse has brought a little piece of Tokyo to Stockholm's former meatpacking district. You'll be greeted by vibrant neon lights, masks depicting Japanese demons and other delicious decor details. Along with artisanal ramen and a wide selection of sake, guests are transported on a gastronomic journey to Japan.

Trattoria Giorgio's draws inspiration from Italian cities in the 1960s, featuring dark wood, velvet-upholstered sofas, and marble mixed with vibrant ceiling paintings by the artist Elin PK. Settle into a comfortable armchair and soak up the atmosphere while you indulge in everything from snacks like olives and focaccia to larger dishes such as pasta, pizza, and meat and fish dishes.

It's not surprising Hantverket is one of the city's best designed restaurants. The owner used to run the interiors company Svensk Inredning, and handcrafts are a key element of the restaurant concept. This is the place to hang out and dine in an elegant but relaxed setting - and perhaps pick up a little interior design inspiration into the bargain.

At Amalia, the focus is on playful cooking and a carefully curated wine selection. The decor is just as well-designed, with a consistent palette of pink and green tones complemented by charming details. Come here when you fancy anything from a glass of wine to a full sharing dinner in exquisitely designed surroundings.

The Lounge is the sophisticated and relaxed meeting place within the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel in the heart of the city. A restaurant and bar in Scandinavian design style that's open from morning to evening. Start your day with breakfast, have lunch, enjoy dinner, or round off the day with a drink.

Sit down under the large crystal chandeliers at Berns Asiatiska, where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. The magnificent restaurant was one of the country's first Chinese restaurants and maintains the same high standards and glamorous atmosphere today.

This beloved Italian restaurant is housed in an old cinema building, with a ceiling height of six metres, beautiful stuccoes, and large wall paintings by the Swedish artist Nils Asplund. The restaurant consists of two bars and a dining room serving authentic Italian food and drinks.

A historic building from the 1870s is now home to Stockholm Stadshotell, whose restaurant attracts both overnight guests and external visitors. The historic atmosphere is complemented by considered, elegant interiors in classic style. The restaurant is divided into several smaller rooms, where you can enjoy Nordic dishes in a slightly more intimate setting.

Perched at the top of the Radisson Blu Royal Viking Hotel, this chic bar offers a panoramic view over Stockholm city that's sure to impress. Behind the large gold bar, mixologists shake and stir innovative cocktails, along with a mix of classics and various bubbly drinks to form an extensive drinks menu. Come by for post-work drinks, a date, or to hang out with friends in a trendy urban setting.

Inside the DN skyscraper building, Kitchin by Kasai has created a little piece of Japan. Rice lamps in various shapes, colourful neon lighting, and walls depicting the backstreets of Tokyo set the tone. The menu follows the same theme, featuring sushi and other Japanese dishes. 

The name Ling Long is taken from a Chinese fashion magazine from the Thirties - so it's no coincidence that the restaurant, within Story Hotel, is seriously gorgeous. All raw concrete walls, velvet touches and rough pared-back tables. Modern fusion dishes with inspiration from China's Sichuan province, as well as Bali and Singapore, are served. The bar is an added bonus. 

When it's time for a barbecue party in South America they host a churrasco, where meat is grilled and served directly from the grill to the guests. Umami Grill does churrasco their own way, with meat, fish, seafood, and vegetables served directly from the grill until you say stop. Surroundings are atmospheric with neon lights and signs as sources of light.

The legendary Soho House isn't just exclusively for members, it's also exclusively designed. Housed in the beautiful Trefaldighetskyrkan church in Östermalm, it's a spectacular space and the northern Italian restaurant Club Cecconi's is no less impressive. The green, white and black colour scheme creates a classy, cohesive feel.
