Guide to Stockholm's best street food

Meat on a Stick specialises in kebabs, but it's far from your average dodgy kebab joint. The emphasis here is on homemade kebabs made from top quality fresh ingredients served in freshly-baked pita bread. The menu includes classic kebabs and more innovative combinations, such as goat cheese cream and mango salsa.

Dutch-inspired Pom Friterie worked on their fresh, organic, hand-cut French fries for several years to get them perfectly crispy. They've now achieved their aim and serve up the fries on Lästmakargatan, topped with sauces and sides with flavours from all over the world. The bar mixes up the odd cocktail, perfect for completing the flavour experience. 

”Streetfood LA-style” – that's the result of the flavour experiments The Street Food Labs have been tinkering with to achieve their signature concept. Mexican street food classics combine with Asian and American flavours, resulting in new variations of burritos, bowls and tacos. Grab a takeaway, or tuck in on site with a refreshing beer or cocktail in your glass. 

If you're a fan of fried chicken head straight for Bird, where chicken in all forms takes centre stage. Culinary inspiration comes from Asian and American street food, with dishes including buttermilk fried chicken, Szechuan wings and parmesan fries.

Scandwich is all about good food, drinks and company. In what format? Well, substantial Danish-style open sandwiches, exciting natural wines and guest appearances on tap. Sandwiches which have won them the Sandwich Championships. There are various toppings - both meat and vegan - all with masses of flavour and generous ingredients.

Subculture started as a small kiosk in Årstaberg, and can now also be found in central Stockholm. Enjoy hearty and reasonably priced sandwiches with flavours from various parts of the world, served in a baguette. Definitely worth a visit.

Boo Burgers is fast food in two senses of the word – it's quick both to get the food and to get there, as the restaurant is in the thick of the action on Drottninggatan. Great burgers are served in this corner spot where every detail has been considered, particularly the meat which is smashed into a crispy, juicy, flavoursome bite and encased in bread, together with classic toppings such as pickled cucumber, pearl onions, ketchup and mustard. The premises are small but still seat around twenty inside and as many on the outdoor terrace, making it just as suitable for a quick lunch on the go as for happy hour with burgers and beer.

They're not afraid of flavour at Cong Cong - just like in Vietnam. Choose from sandwiches, spring rolls, fresh salads, shellfish and tofu dishes. Perfect for sharing around the tables so everyone can enjoy the range of flavours and textures Vietnamese cuisine provides: acidic, spicy, sweet and crispy. 

This colourful restaurant on Nytorget is a hot tip for anyone who craves genuine Mexican street food in the style of quesadillas, tacos and churros. Wash your meal down with, for example, a frozen margarita, beer, cava or Mexican lemonade. A relaxed concept inspired by surfing trips to Mexico. La Olita also has a glassed-in outdoor seating area that's open year-round.

Quite possibly the coolest hangout spot of the summer is called Plåtparken, on the quayside in Marievik. Old containers have been transformed into a cool urban spot with sun decks, music, food, and drinks. The menu features bao buns and burgers, best enjoyed with something refreshing such as beer, wine, or cocktails. Naturally, there are also non-alcoholic options available.

You could describe Lådan as a food truck without wheels, or as the little sister restaurant to Flippin' Burgers. They serve street food-inspired dishes with the same emphasis on top-notch ingredients and sustainability, with a constantly-changing menu that often includes themes and guest appearances from various corners of the world. Come for tacos and sliders with a twist and an urban bar scene. 

La Neta's aim is to serve genuine Mexican food, a world away from the pre-fab Tex-Mex the average Swede slings together on 'Taco Fridays'. This is the place to come for uncomplicated Mexican street food in an authentic taquería environment. You'll find Latin American classics such as tortillas, tacos and quesedillas with fillings such as slow-cooked beef chuck, beans, cheese and quacamole. 

The concept is simple; vegan and vegetarian food with halloumi and falafel taking centre stage. Choose between wraps or salads with delicious sides and dippers. Actors Mahmut Suvakci and Joel Kinnaman, who also run the hamburger joint Lily's Burger, are the owners. Drop by and eat in the dining room, the outdoor dining area or buy something to take away.

Italian street food in the form of stupendous sandwiches filled with charcuterie, cheese, fresh vegetables and spreads is the order of the day at Bar Schiacciate. This little spot, which can be found at several addresses in Stockholm, also serves wine and beer as well as their own coffee. If you're lucky, you'll manage to bag a free seat, otherwise you can grab your sandwich to-go.

Kenny Jones Jr, an American, founded The Good Gringo because he missed San Francisco-style burritos when he moved to Stockholm. He now serves authentic "Mission-style Burritos" at several spots around town, filled with fresh ingredients such as vegetables, sauces, rice and your choice of protein. 

Vår Pizza draws inspiration from the metropolis of street food, Brooklyn. The pizza craftsmanship comes from Naples but the toppings range from everything from pepperoni to burrata. Vår Pizza can be found in several locations around the city, where they focus on a welcoming pub atmosphere that's open to everyone.

At K25, there are around ten restaurants that are experts in delivering street food at affordable prices. Choose from a varied selection of taste experiences from cuisines such as the USA, Asia, Italy, and France.

At Xôi, you can slurp noodles while also doing a service to both your health and the environment. This little spot on Drottninggatan serves pho, banh mi, and other authentic street food from Vietnam, which not only tastes great but also contains plenty of nutrition and is designed to provide a balanced diet. The ingredients used are fresh and often organic, and they use energy-saving methods during preparation to reduce climate impact.

Leave Stockholm for a while and discover the food culture of India. Shanti serves up a unique culinary experience of Bengali and Indian flavours. Come for a simple meal, takeaway or to sit, eat and drink for hours. 

Suris Street Food started out as a hole in the wall, but has evolved into a small joint with a few seats thanks to frequent visits from both regulars and new guests. Come to enjoy the street food with influences from every corner of Asia, such as bowls, fresh spring rolls, and noodle soups. Almost everything on the menu is available vegetarian. 

Dirty Taco forge their own path when it comes to composing menus. Although the concept is based on tacos, they're not specifically Mexican - they take flavours from all over the world and experiment with unexpected, exciting flavour combinations, sauces, seasoning and sides. You can enjoy their creative tacos at several different spots around town. 

Point out and select what you want - that's how it works at Barobao, a pared-down, simplified concept where the emphasis is on steamed bao. There are various different fillings for the buns to choose between, whether you're a vegetarian or meat eater. Whichever, they can all be eaten in your fingers, sitting down or on the run, just like street food.

In the heart of Ringen shopping centre you'll find Teatern, Södermalm's foodie hotspot and a modern version of a food court. You'l find street food interpreted by a gang of top chefs, all you have to do is choose what kind of food you want to eat. Slurp tasty noodles at Raaman, by Adam/Albin, or try out Melker Andersson's Mexican joint Dos Gringos.

Indian Street Food & Co combines ancient food traditions with modern flavours, packaged in an urban street food format. Their popular Kathi Rolls are always on the menu; Indian bread filled with flavourful spices, sauces, a mixture of vegetables and your choice of protein. Check out where their food truck is today via social media or visit one of their restaurants in the city.

This little lunch restaurant on Malmskillnadsgatan specialises in "fine street food" from Asia, with everything from salads to bibimbap and pad thai on the menu. All made from seasonal, organic and locally-produced ingredients wherever possible. With a limited number of tables, Happy Rooster is also a good takeaway option.
