Where to watch the FIFA World Cup in Stockholm

At O'Learys Event Center in Tolv Stockholm, which is one of Europe's largest sports bars, the World Cup is the main event. Here you can watch the matches on large screens as well as via a gigantic jumbotron. All of Sweden's matches are shown, including the one on 15 June when doors open as early as 3am. Table reservations are recommended and special World Cup packages are offered, with items such as drinks vouchers, English breakfast buffet and à la carte food.

At Retro's branches, found at several addresses around the city, pub culture mixes with American vibes for a diverse crowd of sports enthusiasts. Combine World Cup matches with solid pub food such as burgers, nachos and fried snacks. If you want to be sure of getting a table when Sweden are playing, it's a good idea to book in advance. During the group stage, Retro is open until 1am from Sunday to Thursday, except on 26 June when Sweden face Japan and they'll keep going until 3am.

Kungsholmen's ultimate summer oasis, Eden, is showing several matches from the Football World Cup on a big screen in the large bar and in Loftet, and it's free to come and watch. As well as sport, expect colourful drinks, natural wine, oysters, grilled food, and a full-on summer vibe by the water. They'll be showing Sweden's matches against the Netherlands and Japan, as well as many other matches. 

True to tradition, Bleck is showing the football championship on a big screen for everyone who wants to cheer along with like‑minded fans. The matches are mainly shown on the sunny outdoor terrace in Lilla Blecktornsparken and are accompanied by summery food and refreshing wine. It's drop-in here, so make sure you arrive in good time.

This leafy summer café is showing several of the World Cup matches outdoors, and is jumping the gun a little by showing Sweden's World Cup warm-up matches on 1 and 4 June. Entry is free and it's drop-in only.

This is where football fans mingle with beer and whisky lovers. The Flying Horse is a classic sports bar in a cosy yet forward-thinking setting, offering over 100 varieties of beer and whisky. If you want to make the World Cup experience even more classic, just tuck into the pub grub in the same vein. Sweden's matches against both the Netherlands and Japan are shown here.

At the Irish pub Pickwick on Drottninggatan, you can watch the Football World Cup in an atmosphere that feels like a living room, only with someone else taking care of everything around you. Just like being at home, but without having to sort out the food or do the washing up! The focus is on a great vibe, good sound, tasty food and cold drinks. During the World Cup, all matches that finish by 1.30am are shown, on screens both indoors and outdoors.

On Kungsholmen, Ballbreaker activity centre is showing the World Cup in their lower lounge. If you want to combine watching with dinner, you can book a table in the restaurant; otherwise, you can just drop in. To celebrate the championship, they're serving the “Golden Goal”, which consists of their Ballbreaker burger along with a drink at a reasonable price.

Right in the heart of Stockholm, this neighbourhood pub is showing all World Cup matches during regular opening hours, with extended hours when Sweden play. Demand is of course expected to be extra high then, so the safest bet is to book a table in advance. For pre-booked groups there is a set menu with food or sharing snacks. Spontaneous football fans are welcome to drop into the bar. To celebrate the World Cup, a special pub sandwich is being served, created by Tom and Henrik from the band JUNG. 

Molly Malone's is a classic Irish pub with everything that entails. Follow the Football World Cup here and watch every match live together with plenty of other football lovers. Perfect if you want to enhance the match experience with pub food, beer, and a convivial atmosphere.

Häktet's inner courtyard is a real hotspot all summer, but during the World Cup it's sure to be buzzing even more. Matches are shown on a 15-square-metre screen, accompanied by cold drinks, strong sporting solidarity and, of course, a few nerves. All matches kicking off no later than 9pm will be shown, as well as Sweden's clashes with Tunisia and Japan, the former of which will be shown indoors in Häktet's side spot, Volta. A few tables can be booked at a set price with drinks and snacks included; otherwise it's walk-in only.

Catch the World Cup at Södermalm's top summer club hangout! Trädgården is showing the matches on several big screens and will stay open longer when Sweden play – in fact, all the way until 6.30am for the super-early (or late, depending on who you ask) meeting with Tunisia. Sweden's first match coincides with RnB Klubben Midsommar and the third with one of Trädgården's techno Thursdays. Perfect for all football fans who want a bit of a night out vibe at the same time.

Right by Djurgårdsbron there'll be beer, sandwiches, sunsets and football on a big screen during the World Cup. In fine weather the matches are shown outside in the garden, but there are also TVs indoors if it rains more than the umbrellas can handle. All matches that fall within Strandhäxan's licensing hours are shown here, and they also aim to show the most important matches played at night.

If you want to combine World Cup excitement with a summery archipelago feel, head to Restaurant J, by the water in Nacka Strand. The interior has an American East Coast, Newport style, which is fitting as the World Cup is partly being played in the USA. Instead of noisy and crowded, J goes for a homely and relaxed atmosphere for friends, families and other football fans who want to experience the big sporting moments together. Selected matches are shown on screens at the outdoor bar and can be accompanied by burgers and beer at an extra friendly World Cup price.

At the Postbar at Urban Deli Nytorget you can watch the Football World Cup with old and new friends in an inviting atmosphere. The matches are shown on a big screen and paired with food and drink, so why not cheer along with a luxurious charcuterie board or something else tasty? It's first come, first served, so a tip is to arrive early and fuel up with a glass of bubbles or a refreshing cocktail. Urban Deli Nytorget will have extended opening hours when Sweden play Japan.

Eight floors up in the Scandic Continental, the rooftop bar Capital is transformed into the “home ground of football”, where you can follow the matches framed by views over Södermalm, Kungsholmen and the City Hall. As well as large screens both indoors and outdoors, there's a game zone, ice-cold drinks and summery food. Capital shows all of Sweden's group-stage matches, and for the games against Tunisia and the Netherlands, expert commentators will be on site to talk about the play.

Take the lift up from Brunkebergstorg and cross the bridge from Tak (if you dare) and you'll find yourself on an extraordinary rooftop terrace. You can eat, drink, dance, mingle, sunbathe, watch outdoor cinema and - of course – watch the summer's Football World Cup on a big screen. If you need to rest your eyes from the World Cup for a second, take the opportunity to enjoy the unbeatable view. SUS is showing the World Cup between 11 June and 19 July and has free entry.

This summer, Vår Gård is bringing plenty of football spirit to Saltsjöbaden. They're showing all of Sweden's matches in Vincaféet, and naturally a bunch of other games too, on a big screen. As the name suggests, the café is fully licensed, so you can enjoy a drink and have snacks or lighter dishes while you cheer along with other fans. Why not  stay overnight at the hotel as well, or go for a dip from the jetty?

The Italian wine bar Sessanta isn't turning into a sports bar just because it's the World Cup. They do show matches, however, but in their own way and with their usual lively atmosphere. Selected matches are shown on a big screen, prioritising Sweden and the biggest clashes, sometimes with sound and sometimes just as background. As usual, there's plenty of wine, pizza, pasta and snacks to quench your thirst and satisfy your hunger. The match schedule is updated regularly on Sessanta's website.

At Blique design hotel in Vasastan, the Football World Cup will be taking over the entire leafy inner courtyard, where matches are shown on a 15-square-metre screen. All matches kicking off no later than 11pm will be shown, and there are both bookable tables and drop-in spots available. They also offer booking options for companies and larger groups who want to watch together in a more secluded setting. As well as football, there will be street food, refreshing drinks, music and a party atmosphere.

In lush Observatorielunden, Obsan has opened a “football garden”, as they call it. Selected matches are shown on a really big screen with the sky as the roof, and there are also plenty of chilled drinks if you fancy sipping something nice. Book a table to make sure you get a spot, or drop by spontaneously.

From the outdoor terrace of Södra Teatern you can enjoy both magnificent views and live football at the same time. Throughout the World Cup, matches are shown on two big screens, with the open sky, Stockholm harbour and the Old Town as a backdrop. Of Sweden's matches, Mosebacke Terrace will be showing the games against the Netherlands and Japan. With space for a full 2,000 people, the atmosphere is sure to be absolutely electric.

A more central address than Hobo's would be hard to find. On Brunkebergstorg, the World Cup is shown on screens either outdoors or indoors, depending on the weather and the mood. Drop in spontaneously for a drink, or make a whole evening of it and combine the cheering with an overnight stay at the hotel. Which matches are shown is updated regularly via Hobo's Instagram.

There are few moments in summer when Götgatan outside Holidays Bar isn't teeming with people, and the crowd size is hardly likely to shrink during the World Cup. The lively bar shows the matches both outdoors and indoors, so if you want to cheer along with a really cheerful bunch, this is a place to remember. As always, they'll be serving American food and cold drinks at decent prices.

Follow the football on leafy Reimersholme island! In good weather, the hotel will be showing the matches on several outdoor screens and extending opening hours when Sweden play late. If you arrive in good time, you can take the opportunity to have a dip in the water, play a round of boules, eat something in the restaurant or have a drink in the absinthe bar before kick-off. Expect a packed crowd in blue and yellow.

Soth's Kitchen, inside the Courtyard by Marriott Stockholm hotel on Kungsholmen, will be showing the World Cup outside on the terrace all summer. Combine the cheering with a summery drink or a beer from Swedish microbreweries, or why not a dinner for a proper evening out.

Want to watch the Football World Cup with a beer in hand, in homely, intimate surroundings? Then Brother Tuck, or “Tucken”, is a great option. A classic Södermalm pub but with a slightly nicer vibe than many similar spots. Showing Sweden's matches against the Netherlands and Japan, as well as a bunch of other games played while the bar is open.

Cheer alongside other die-hard sports fans at all three of Pitchers sports bar's branches. In addition to their regular menu of gastropub dishes, a World Cup burger, World Cup platter and World Cup sandwich will be served, featuring flavours from the host nations.

This restaurant institution is showing matches throughout the football World Cup, in its own particular way. The idea is for the broadcasts to enhance guests' dining experience, not take it over. Therefore, they offer three different setups: the courtyard where you can drop in and watch selected matches without sound; table reservations in Salong Selma Lagerlöf where the Sweden vs Netherlands match is accompanied by food from the à la carte menu; and private salons that can be booked for groups of at least ten people. As well as the match against the Netherlands, Sturehof will also show Sweden's meeting with Japan. A good option if you prefer a slightly calmer environment than a rowdy sports pub. 

Birka, which has been one of Stockholm's most obvious places for the city's bowlers since 1970, is open in the summer for bowling, darts and sport. During regular opening hours you can follow the Football World Cup on the TV screens, perhaps with a hamburger in one hand and a glass of beer in the other. Over the Midsummer weekend, when Sweden play the Netherlands, Birka is closed, and because the other Swedish matches are played at night, none of Sweden's group-stage matches will be shown here.

Usually, esports take centre stage at Kappa Bar, but during the Football World Cup they turn the spotlight towards more physical sports and show the championship on screen. All matches that fall within the bar's regular opening hours are shown, with extended opening on the nights when Sweden play. They want to make the World Cup a complete experience to share with others, with food, drink, and a full-on atmosphere from kick-off to the final whistle.

At Restaurant Tarantella in Bredäng in south-west Stockholm, all of Sweden's matches during the World Cup will be shown, as well as other selected matches when opening hours are extended until 3am. For Sweden's opening match, which kicks off at 4am, the restaurant will serve breakfast.

With its elegant outdoor seating area and waterfront views, Mister French is a true summer oasis for all football fans. During the World Cup, they set up state-of-the-art screens to deliver a genuine live-sport feel, in an atmosphere that feels a bit more exclusive than a classic sports bar. In conjunction with the matches, they'll be serving both the regular à la carte and a specially developed World Cup menu. 

The classic Zinkensdamm spot Southside has made several updates to deliver a first-class World Cup experience. Among other things, they've installed large new projectors on both the ground and upper floors, upgraded the sound system, and given the interior a facelift. As usual, classic bar grub, such as burgers and fish & chips, is served.

Liebling's leafy biergarten, whose outdoor seating spreads out at the corner of the Sankt Paulsgatan/Timmermansgatan junction, will be showing the World Cup as long as it's not raining or stormy. The park is open from midday–midnight throughout the tournament and shows the matches played within that time frame. They close over midsummer, so none of Sweden's group-stage matches are shown here, but on other days there'll be a great atmosphere with beer, hot dogs, ice cream and football fever.

During the World Cup, the City of Stockholm is putting up a big screen, which was initially installed in Kungsträdgården but, after high public demand, was moved to Stadion, where everyone is welcome to cheer together. As several matches are played late at night, security guards will be on site during the festivities. Some matches, as well as the final, will also be shown on screens in Husby, Pilparken in Spånga and Bredängsparken in Skärholmen, but the most frequent screenings will be at Stadion.

At Norra Bantorget, specifically in the schoolyard of Norra Latin, almost all World Cup matches are shown for free on a big screen, with free entry. However, Sweden's night-time matches are shown indoors on the main stage at Dansens Hus. On site there are food trucks serving food from the countries participating in the World Cup, and when Sweden play at 4am, they offer breakfast. Anyone who prioritises their sleep can come here after lunch, when replays from the previous night's matches are shown. The World Cup screenings at Norra Bantorget are alcohol-free.
