Livrustkammaren
Livrustkammaren - the Royal Armoury - is housed in beautiful vaults under the Royal Palace. Once you enter the vaults you'll encounter a slice of royal Swedish history with historical objects such as costumes, suits of armour and weapons from as far back as the 1600s.
The Royal Armoury is Sweden's museum of royal history and many of the Armoury's 30,000 or so objects have connections to the Swedish kings - from Gustav Vasa to the present day. There are plenty of fascinating objects stored and displayed in the cellar vaults under the Royal Palace, from ceremonial wear and unique weapons to coronation, wedding and christening robes.
Some of the artefacts in the collection were present at important historical events, such as Vissa Gustav II Adolf's stuffed horse Streiff, from the Battle of Lützen in 1632, and Gustav III's masquerade costume from his assassination at the opera in 1792, as well as coronation carriages and ceremonial coaches from the Royal Stables. We know a great deal about many of the objects, such as who owned them, who made them and why, due to comprehensive documentation in the form of inventories, receipts and accounts. Younger visitors will enjoy the Children's Armoury.
The museum opened in the 1800s and still welcomes visitors to the premises in the southeast corner of the Royal Palace, with entry from Slottsbacken. Get to know the exhibits on your own, borrow an audio guide or join a guided tour organised for groups, children and adults. There's also a well-stocked museum store where you can buy a souvenir of your visit to take home with you.
