The best restaurants in Östermalm

This sophisticated Asian-fusion restaurant strikes the prefect balance between East and West. Exotic, aromatic dishes and artisanal cocktails contribute to the relaxed, yet bustling atmosphere.

This restaurant, housed in the luxurious Hotel Diplomat, is characterised by its signature Art Nouveau style and is beautifully located on the shorefront by Nybrokajen. Brasserie Astoria, run by the Frantzén group of restaurants, serves up an international and elegant experience with 1920s influences. As well as the large dining room there's also a large bar area with cocktails and DJs, a wine bar and a more intimate dining room area with its own entrance for drop-in guests.

Frippe is something of an institution, housed in Dramaten and named after Dramaten's performer Gustav “Frippe” Fredriksson. When the team behind the popular restaurant Sandhäxan took over Frippe in 2023, they kept the name but changed the concept to a delightfully lively Spanish tapas bar. Take a seat at the long bar, order a few small dishes, sip on a glass of fizz (or five), and simply enjoy the atmosphere. Book a table or drop in spontaneously and hope to snag a spot.

With jazz at its heart and culinary influences from France, Aristo has created a modern local bistro. This means a classic three-course menu with familiar flavours, but with a slight twist from the chefs working from the open kitchen. This neighbourhood restaurant is one of the most recent additions to the ever-reliable Bockholmengruppen stable of restaurants. Paraden can be found in the middle of Valhallavägen and has been a popular haunt among locals and regulars since it opened. You can eat lunch and dinner here or just have a drink at the bar. They serve brunch at the weekend.

At the far end of  Östermalmshallen indoor food market, Lisa Elmqvist serves the very best and freshest produce from the sea. Take a seat in the luxurious dining room and pick and choose from dishes such as fish soup, seafood platter and shellfish risotto. They've also put a great deal of care into the drinks menu, which includes a wide selection of cocktails, wine and beer. 

The restaurants in the Svenska Brasserier group are institutions on the Stockholm restaurant scene, and most of them are centrally located around Stureplan. Enjoy the Continental atmosphere at Sturehof or the classic dishes at Riche and Teatergrillen.

Mikael Einarsson used to be head chef at Brasserie Astoria, but he now runs Chez Jolie on Ingmar Bergmans gata. Sample his own interpretation of French classics, drink French wines and sip cocktails.

Maxim Framfickan restaurant, inside Maxim cultural centre, is run by the Barbro team. As at Barbro, small and medium plates with flavours from Asia are the order of the day, seasoned with a generous dose of ambition. The dining experience is framed by thoughtful decor and Maxim's cultural vibes. 

Cuculo continues the legacy of Östergök, which used to be housed in the same premises a few steps from Karlaplan. The result is a neighbourhood restaurant in a modern retro style, with its own interpretations of Italian flavours and playful bar hangout. It's just as suitable for a family dinner as for an aperitivo with friends.

Right by Ellen Keys park on Birger Jarlsgatan lies Parken, which offers both a sunny outdoor seating area and a cosy indoor restaurant. E&G's relaxed sister restaurant Teddys on Sibyllegatan is a combined restaurant and wine bar open from morning to evening. Teddys has created a second living room for anyone looking to meet up over lunch, dinner, or a glass of wine in the heart of Östermalm. There's also a small deli counter full of fine foods.

Over the years, one of the glass houses on the quayside of Strandvägen has housed, among other things, both gas stations and restaurants, but it's now had the same owner since 2018. The restaurant, appropriately-named Glashuset, focuses on Swedish and local food in the form of small dishes with international flavours. If small dishes are not your thing - don't despair, there are also larger main courses on the menu.

Forget electric griddles and gas ovens - at Niklas Ekstedt's Michelin-starred restaurant on Humlegårdsgatan food is cooked over open fire. The kitchen explores ancient cooking techniques, serving their own version of Nordic cuisine, with seasonal ingredients and Swedish flavours.  

Black Milk Gastro Bar serves a luxurious omakase experience along with drinks from Artilleriets cocktail bar, Stjärtilleriet. The evening restaurant is next door to the lunch concept Black Milk Gastro Lunch.
