When the temperature and snow begin to fall, the urge to strap on skis and hit the cross-country trails grabs many Swedes. You don't have to head up to the mountains to get your fix; there are plenty of well-maintained ski tracks in and around Stockholm, most of them accessible by public transport. Some of the tracks are prepared with artificial snow, while others are dependent on natural snowfall. In this guide we've rounded up ski tracks to suit beginners and experienced skiers alike, some with equipment hire on site, allowing everyone to get a taste of this exhilarating winter sport.

Cross-country skiing in Stockholm

Hellasgården, in Nacka, is a popular spot for cross-country skiing for beginners and experienced skiers alike. Choose between various different tracks and hire full equipment if you need to. The tracks are dependent on natural snow so you can only ski in winter weather.

Artificial and natural snow
Ski trails in Gärdet park begin at Kampementsbadet and the trails are illuminated at the start and finish. The tracks, some of which are made from artificial snow and some from natural snow, are prepared when conditions allow. The trails aren't usually too crowded and are regularly improved with artificial snow if required. There's a charge for skiing the artificial snow track between Kampementsbadet and Filmhuset, but elsewhere it's free.

Several different tracks
Ågesta has ski tracks that can only be skied on when enough natural snow has fallen. The other two tracks, the artificial snow tracks, are prepared when the temperature has been below freezing for a longer period. The lighting is switched on at dusk and there's a fee for skiing the artificial snow tracks, but it's free to ski on the golf course.

Short trails
Enjoy cross-country skiing on artificial snow on one of the classic open ski trails just a stone's throw from the underground. Given the location, the ski trails are shorter than at other places, making it particularly suitable for beginners. There's a fee for using the tracks.

Family-friendly
There are five different ski tracks of varying lengths at Ursviks sports ground in Sundbyberg, depending on the weather conditions. Trails are open from 6am-9.30pm every day, except when youth and senior groups are training. A day pass costs around 135 SEK for an adult.

For a longer ski tour
Lövstaspåret is an illuminated ski track with natural snow in Hässelby. The trail is around 3 km long, but if you continue on a track around Viksjö golf course you'll add on another 6 km. There's an outdoor gym at the start if you want to combine skiing with weight training. The track is illuminated until 10pm every evening.

Stockholm's best artificial snow track
There's a floodlit cross-country track at Saltsjöbaden golf club, which you can get to on the Saltsjöbanan train, perfect if you like skiing early mornings and late evenings as well as in the middle of the day. Since 2016 the golf club has provided a high-quality ski facility with a floodlit trail made using artificial snow. Their aim is to provide "Stockholm's best artificial snow track". Children up to 18 years old ski for free.

When the weather allows
You'll find ski tracks for classic skiing in Fredhällsparken in Kungsholmen, as well as free skiing when there's at least 30 cm of natural snow and below-freezing temperatures. Fredhälls park is close to both Thorildsplan and Kristinebergs underground station, several bus stations and walking distance to Fridhemsplan.

Hilly floodlit tracks
Ski across hilly floodlit tracks and fields a stone's throw from Östermalm, close to Norra Djurgårdsstaden. Skafferiet i Ekoparken café is right door if you want to stop by for a coffee and something to eat; dogs are also welcome here.

Artificial snow track on Ekerö
On Ekerö just outside Stockholm, Ekebyhovsbacken offers both cross-country skiing and downhill skiing. The artificial snow track is regularly groomed. Children up to 16 years ski for free, for an adult it costs approximately 120 kronor/day.

In the heart of nature
At Bruket recreation area in Järfälla, you can ski both cross-country and downhill. Enjoy cross-country skiing in a lovely setting, close to Lake Mälaren. The track is approximately 900 metres long and a day pass costs around 50 kronor for an adult. Please note that Järfälla Ski Club has priority on the tracks during their training times.
