Maiz Mexican

Maiz... Not so najz.

You know that saying "sold the butter with the money"... That's exactly how my feeling was when I left here, from an otherwise very pleasant evening. I had really drowned in my hopes and expectations for what looked like a tacos paradise. I have an unhealthy relationship with tacos and if you take a universal definition of "addiction", yep then you will find me in it. Tacos control my everyday life, it sneaks in here and there. Just yesterday I ate it for lunch and the leftovers that were left over... well they became part of the supper that became, believe it or not ... Tacos. Handy, some dishes and dreamy. Well, I love tacos and after what I had heard and seen on social media, I was fantastically happy when I got company to the neighborhood restaurant Maiz.

The room I think is very cozy, like that they have an upper floor so you can look down at the bar / out on the street. Perhaps, however, it was the case that we managed to get the best seat along the railing that contributed to us not having to sit pressed anywhere. Don't know how happy I would have been if we were placed near the bar and the door down there... will probably never know.

The staff were initially nice and welcomed (I came last) but not much more than that and it turned out in retrospect what a fantastic lack of service awareness they are here. I have mentioned many times in my reviews how I want to feel that relaxed feeling in not having to lift a finger, to the point: not having to think when I make a restaurant visit haha - it's part of the service itself, I think. Here the menu was not updated (it said otherwise on the website and different on the menus that we received) and was misleading and in this case so poorly described that you had to guess how much food there would be in each dish. In the past, the menu has apparently been a bit more expensive with more than one tacos per order, now a bit cheaper but with only one... something that is extremely important to tell your restaurant guests. We also had to wave at the waiter (who missed us and our order a couple of times), perceived the waiting time for the food as long and all around there were plates and debris. She was, however, very nimble about wanting to remove our plates even though we hadn't eaten. Rather unprofessional and stressful, but we sat calmly in the boat.

The food I was really so described on - and they do not serve authentically Mexican (thank god - then I can still go to Mexico) but fresh flavors that take influences mainly from Peru, East Asia and sometimes even Sweden. On the website they write "Be prepared to be both surprised and seduced" and "The food is challenging, with heat and flavors that stand out. Ordered deep fried corn and I had really imagined fresh deep fried corn with some najs spice on it but absolutely stupid of me not to ask before. Got a small bowl of unsalted half-crunched corn kernels... unclear and please remove it from the menu. Then followed a taco with steak tartare, a tacos with salmon and a tortilla with tuna. It was beautiful to watch and I got lots of inspiration for future tacos nights but it tasted nothing? Overall poorly seasoned and I had to salt the food (everything except the salmon) every time I took a bite. The salvation for the evening was the various strong/sweet tabasco sauces they had on the table that brought up a small portion of that acidity/sweetness/heat in the food. And for those of you who want to learn how to eat steak tartare, I recommend 110% to go to a classed schooled chef who has done it more times than you will eat throughout life. Shameful to serve a steak tartare that way... completely mashed and slimy. You are doing yourself a favor not to order it. Was absolutely SURPRISED that it was so bad and absolutely SEDUCED in my opinion FOR THE DECEIVE which also means deceiving someone. .. haha.

In other words, if you want a culinary -> dining experience <- you should spend your money on another restaurant. In any case, I will continue to cook my own beloved svenne-tacos!
