The best art galleries in Stockholm

Wetterling Gallery has been catering to art-lovers since 1978 and is one of Scandinavia's most prominent galleries. During recent years, more Swedish talent has been showcased - both up-and-coming and established artists. The gallery focuses upon paintings, photography and sculptures.

Galleri Stockholm in the city centre sells artworks from some of Sweden's best-known artists. They exhibit some 240 framed artworks, ready to take home and hang on your wall. You'll find many unusual, unexpected paintings on the more than 170 metres of wall space.

This gallery prides itself with a carefully curated collection of street art, exhibiting the works of New York artist Neck Face and Dash Snow (curated by Leo Fitzpatrick from the movie Kids) for example. Galerie Nordenhake has been around since the 70's and has amassed quite a reputation for itself. Since the 90's they also have a branch in Berlin. The gallery exhibits popular international and domestic artists and participates in all major art fairs.

With 500 square meters at its disposal, next to a courtyard in Vasastan's gallery district, Andersson/Sandström exhibits an exciting assortment of contemporary international artists, both famous and unknown. Louise Bourgeois is just one of the many creatives to have showcased their work there.

Since the 1990's founders Cilene Andréhn and Marina Schiptjenk have enhanced Stockholm's art scene, introducing several major players. Famous artists have had their big break-through here, and the gallery's exhibitions attract a wide audience.

Artipelag is a popular contemporary art destination beautifully located by the sea. The venue boasts art gallery, boutique and restaurant as well as conference facilities. Botanise among the transitional art collections and pop into the Artipelag Gallery if you feel like taking a piece with you home.

The Kulturhuset Stadsteatern cultural colossus on Sergels torg also puts on art exhibitions. Enjoy exhibitions featuring world-famous artists, young contemporary art, photography, design, and fashion. House of Näsmark is artist Catrine Näsmark's vibrant gallery in Lidingö where she works and lives. You can book private viewings, hold parties and corporate events, or attend painting courses. Catrine Näsmark dedicates much of her time to portrait painting and has painted portraits of the king and queen, among other works. She's also passionate about vintage motorbikes.

Galleri Flach is also located in Vasastan’s gallery district. Contemporary artists are highlighted with a wide scope of art forms. Flach differentiates itself from its peers though its partnerships, introducing talented artists from Africa.

Galleri Magnus Karlsson was founded back in 1990, in Västerås. A few years later, they moved to Stockholm and started their gallery focusing on promoting new Swedish artists and establishing long-term relationships. 

This gallery on Södermalm is run by the artists themselves and it reflects their individual visions. The members take turns exhibiting but they also invite guest artists and curators to show their work.

Cfhill is an art gallery located next to the Army Museum. They used to be in premises on Kungsträdgården and have since exhibited works by artists such as Hilma af Klint, Yayoi Kusama, and Andy Warhol.

The boutique inside MOOD Stockholm is a dream come true for art buffs that want their walls covered with the works of famous photographers but can't afford one-of-a-kind pieces. Larger volume = lower prices. The offering ranges from nature to fashion and is available in numerous different formats.

Misschiefs started as an exhibition featuring works by 10 women and non-binary individuals selected for their groundbreaking art. Or as Misschiefs puts it: art that is "punk by nature". The gallery has continued exhibiting alternative art created by women and non-binary individuals.

At Alice Hair & Art, you can combine business with pleasure and get your hair done while enjoying some art. The founder, Sara Alice Dahlgren, describes it as a concept studio where she exhibits everything from paintings, photos and sculptures to jewellery and clothes from various creators. As well as enjoying art and getting a haircut, you can also take part in various creative events here.

This gallery is the brainchild of the artists Cornelia Sojdelius and Eric Gadd. The gallery mainly focuses on young, female artists who work in various techniques. Above all, they aim to spark conversation and surprise with the art.

Naturally, an art school needs its own art gallery. Right next door to Konstfack art school on Telefonplan is Galleri Konstfack, where the students exhibit their own art. Discover the great artists of tomorrow.

Artten is a bohemian gallery, where art, fashion, and craftsmanship with a focus on peace and freedom come together. As well as exhibitions, various types of workshops and events also take place here.

Get your daily dose of rock 'n' roll at Oak Island Gallery, in the form of unique art. The gallery is run by siblings Jesper and Nella Hurtig, who created the gallery to provide Stockholm with a welcoming space dedicated to art, inspired by art galleries they'd visited in cities such as London, New York, Berlin and Santa Barbara. Oak Island isn't just a gallery, it's an inviting and creative space where you can meet around art and music.
