Life in the Nordics over 500 years
In the beautiful leafy surroundings of Djurgården, you'll find the magnificent brick building that houses the Nordic Museum. Follow a journey through time through true stories, objects and exhibitions, from the 1500s to the present day, and find out how life in the Nordics has been formed over the centuries.
In an iconic building that opened in 1907, the Nordic Museum tells the story of life in Sweden and Scandinavia over the last 500 years. Visitors of all ages can experience dreams, hard work, love, joys and sorrows through the true stories and personal destinies of the people who lived here and formed the society we live in today.
The permanent exhibitions cover themes such as traditions, fashion, handcrafts, domestic life and the life of Nordic inhabitants over the four seasons. Children can experience life on a 19th century farm in the Playhouse or take a journey through time in the Time Vault. The museum also puts on a wide range of temporary exhibitions, lectures, workshops and other events.
The Nordic Museum is home to the museum's restaurant, archive, library and museum shop, where you can browse handcrafts, design gifts, books, toys, decorations and other well chosen Nordic items. There's also a café and bar called Lusknäppen in a brick building in the back courtyard. As well as coffee and cakes, they serve simple food, wine and ice cream here.
